If you had told me a year ago that I’d be standing in a virtual line, queuing up for a ticket (albeit a free ticket) to watch a bunch of people give PowerPoint presentations, I would have laughed hysterically. But, here I am again, happily clutching tickets to the fourth edition of Ignite Fort Collins, an evening of slide presentations on a variety of topics. The quirky-but-always-entertaining event takes place March 4 in Fort Collins. The kicker is that each presenter has only five minutes in front of the crowd. Each speaker’s 20 slides automatically advance after only 15 seconds, so should you not like the speaker or the topic, you only have to withstand 5 minutes of suffering. Not so with most PowerPoint presentations I’ve had to endure in my career, unfortunately. A worldwide movement, Ignite’s motto is “Enlighten us. But make it quick.” Ignite FC #4 is part of Global Ignite week; more than 10,000 presenters in 60 cities on six continents will take the stage during the week of March 1 – 5. And what do people talk about? Everything, though “geeky activities” are encouraged. Past Fort Collins presentation topics (voted into the lineup via online polls prior to the event) have included “I Speak Klingon: Love 101 for Uber-Geeks”, “How I Clothe, Feed, and Entertain My Family with Online Contests”, and even “Best Lessons Learned from Kick-*ss Rock Ballads”.
